Types of motion by an activity

Material required : String, stone.

Procedure:

Linear motion

Tie the stone to the string and place the stone on a smooth table.

Gently pull the string in a horizontal direction and observe the motion of the stone.

The stone moves along a line. Its motion is linear.

Oscillatory motion

Hold the free end of the string so that the stone hangs freely and comes to rest and the string is vertical.

Pull the stone to one side and release it. Observe the motion of the stone (bob).

The stone (bob) moves to and fro about its mean (rest) position.

The motion of the stone (bob) is oscillatory.

Circular motion

Hold the free end of the string between your thumb and forefinger

Swing the string so that the stone moves in a horizontal (or vertical) circle.

The motion of the stone is circular.
